Zoey had been in the orphanage for only a couple days. However, Zoey was bothered by Madeleine's sudden absence. She had gone to the next room over to try and find her because she felt a strange hungry feeling. Remembering what Madeleine had told her about coming to her when she had such feelings, she was dismayed to see that her new caretaker was nowhere to be found.
At meal times she couldn't seem to get herself to eat anything. Other nuns who were working during Madeleine's absence were worried about Zoey, not knowing what she was. Even more strange was that despite Zoey's lack of appetite she seemed just as energetic as the other children when they played outside. It wasn't long though before Zoey started getting lethargic. No matter how hard they tried, no one could get her to eat or drink anything. Zoey knew, perhaps by instinct, that she couldn't eat or drink normal food. What this little girl needed was blood and she was very hungry. She just couldn't identify exactly what she needed on her own.
After another day or so, Zoey collapsed and she was taken to her room. Still, Zoey would not eat and it was at this point that the other nuns decided to try and contact Madeleine at the Vatican.
